I can get in a bad mood quickly. And sometime it’s the smallest thing that triggers the biggest reaction.
Obviously, I need more of Jesus. I need more self-awareness. I need more healing in my heart. That’s why my bad moods are an invitation. They welcome me to realise that there’s something missing on the inside. A hurt that needs the Holy Spirit. An un-met need, that only God the Father can meet.
The Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction. – 2 Cor. 1
The key is radical acceptance. To embrace the moment even when it’s terrible. To be open and honest about what your emotions are communicating. Then, to courageously share it. As Chester and Betsy Kylstra taught me to say, “Whether right or wrong, this is how I feel…”
King David was a master at openly sharing his feelings. But here’s the key: he turned them into worship. Those emotions transformed, became a good portion of the book of Psalms. And they are now, the very word of God. That’s the potential for your current pain, mood, temptation, anger, despair… for it to become life-changing-worship to you, and others.
The Good News about Bad Moods is that the only way to really deal with them, is through humility. To realise that you need others to support you, listen to you, stand by you. And even more, to recognise that we are broken little children still looking for a place to belong. We fear loneliness, but God himself is belonging.
“Fear and love are enemies. They come from two opposing kingdoms. Fear comes from the devil, who would like nothing more than to keep you permanently disconnected and isolated. Love comes from God, who is always working to heal and restore your connection with Him and other people and bring you into healthy, life-giving relationships.” from Danny Silk’s Keep Your Love On: Connection Communication And Boundaries – Must Read!
We are all insecure, and that is why God’s name is Strong Tower, Refuge, my Rock and my Salvation. He is the safest place available… and He is never put off by our bad behaviour. We are irresistible to God, even when we are behaving like toddlers on a tantrum. Jesus proved that with his disciples. God wants to prove it again with you and me.
Use your current bad mood as the perfect excuse to reach out to God; and be comforted by grace.

– “Let Him have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
– “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
“Thank you Father for your patience and your care. Today I feel like this ____________________________.” (Be as honest as possible, God can deal with it).
Then pray, “I give you my heart and my emotions. I breath in your peace, and I hear your voice of truth saying, ____________________________.” (Hear God as a child. And Believe.)
Sometimes the best thing to do with a bad mood, is to intentionally focus on a good one. Music always helps me re-focus. Specially when I set my eyes on Christ and focus on his smile. Try this beautiful tune by Young and Free:
