One of the hardest thing for a young christian, is to abstain from sex before marriage.
Jesus knows that well.
Because sex comes natural, sex is available, and sex is so very good.
This is not a sex-is-everywhere-in-this-day-and-age problem (although that’s true) it is more of an overall human issue. The Apostle Paul had to address it 2,000 years ago when he wrote, “If they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” 1 Corinthias 7:9
It’s human nature to desire a physical connection with a person you are attracted to. And denying that fact is religious stupidity. On the other hand, embracing that truth and being accountable for it… well, that’s the Jesus way.
At least that’s how NFL Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson calls it.
The Jesus way.

The Seahawks Quarterback, opened up about his relationship with pop-star Ciara during a Q&A at The Rock church in San Diego, California (*video interview below).
He acknowledged that making such a big commitment was not going to be easy.
Yet abstinence is what they’re going for. He shared, “She was on tour; she was traveling, and I was looking at her in the mirror, I was sitting in the dressing room, she was getting ready to go…and she was sitting there, and God spoke to me and said, ‘I need you to lead her,’” Wilson recalled. “And I was like, ‘Really, right now?’…And he goes, ‘No, I want you and need you to lead her.’
So I told her right then and there, ‘What would you do if we took all of that extra stuff off the table and just did it Jesus way?’…And she was relieved.”
When the pastor who was doing the interview asked Russell to “elaborate on what that means,” the quarterback said, “Yeah, we’re talking about sex.”
“I knew that God had brought me into her life to bless her, and for her to bless me,” Russell continued, “and to bless so many people with the impact that she has, that I have. We’re not going to be perfect, by any means … but He’s anointed both of us. I know that He’s calling for us to do something miraculous, something special. And I told her — and she completely agreed — is the fact that, ‘Can we love each other without that?’ If you can really love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”
It’s not easy to wait, but it’s harder not to.
[bctt tweet=”We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love. “]
And here’s a famous NFL superstar supporting the Godly idea.
Yes, we know that sex is very good. But, “If you can really love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”
Russell Wilson is an incredible football player and a likeable everyday guy (if the everyday guy was a millionaire that weigh 225 pounds, with 3% body fat and the skills of Roger Staubach combined with Dion Sanders and Jesus).
This winner-believer-athlete became a devout Christian at age 14 when he saw Jesus in a dream. He often references to his faith in press conferences and interviews. He also posts daily Bible verses on his Twitter feed. He told reporters on Super Bowl Media Day, “In terms of my legacy off the field, I want to be a Christian man that helps lead and helps change lives and helps serve other people. It’s not about me, you know, it’s about just helping other people. So that’s kind of where I keep my focus.”
Russell went through a painful divorce last year but kept his heart and focus above. He is good friends with pastor Judah Smith and is constantly serving his community with generosity.
He and Ciara have known each other for about six months, he said. And he calls her the most beautiful, kind person in the world.
“She’s everything you could ever want. If there’s a 10, she’s a 15,” Wilson said, “so I need y’all to pray for me.”
Good on him for being honest.
And better on him for treating her like a queen instead of a piece of NY Strip.
As Kris Vallotton wrote in Moral Revolution: The Naked Truth About Sexual Purity: “We have heard the “keep your virginity” stuff for years without a good explanation for why. We’re trying to play the game, but we aren’t set to win, because no one is telling us that there’s a trophy worth paying a price for.”
Sex was God’s idea. And the goal is not to get rid of your sex drive, but that you manage your appetites. It is important that you rule your passions, and not the other way around.
As I wrote in the article 10 Things To Do While You’re Single, “Stay Pure. Obvious, I know. But hard. Really hard. However, your future husband and wife will be grateful for your strength. I have spent too much time counseling the hearts of champions who lost their way by giving in to sex too quickly. My wife and I barely made it to our honeymoon as virgins. But we did. And 10 years later we are still grateful to each other for the gift of exclusivity.”
Trust me, if you have already slept with someone other than your husband/wife, there is grace and kindness available for you. Jesus is more than capable of restoring what was stolen. You are clean and spotless. God is way bigger than your error. Accept his forgiveness and keep on dreaming.
You are worth waiting for.
Take it from Russell Wilson. A man who in the eyes of the world has everything. Yet he’s choosing obedience, honor and self-sacrifice.
And that will always be the Jesus way.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
